The Nuremberg principles are a set of important rules. They help people decide what counts as a war crime. A war crime is a very serious act committed during a war. These rules were made to explain the legal ideas used in the Nuremberg Trials. Those trials happened after World War II to judge members of the Nazi party.

Today, these principles help the world understand how to hold people accountable for their actions.

One of the most famous parts of these rules is about responsibility. Sometimes, people try to use an excuse called "superior orders." This means they say they only did something bad because a boss told them to. Under the Nuremberg principles, this is not an acceptable excuse. This idea is often called the "Nuremberg Defense." It teaches that people must still follow the law even if they are told otherwise. People are responsible for their own choices during a conflict.

These principles grew out of a need for clear international laws. In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly gave a special task to the International Law Commission. This group was asked to write down the principles used in the Nuremberg Tribunal. They worked on this during their second session. The group wanted to turn the ideas from the trials into a formal list. They published their work in a report in 1950. This helped make the rules part of a larger system of law.

There are many details about how these rules work in the real world. For example, the Rome Statute was agreed upon in 1998. This document helped create the International Criminal Court. The statute looks at orders to commit genocide or crimes against humanity. It says such orders are clearly unlawful. Another example involves conscientious objectors. These are people who refuse to fight in a war for their own beliefs. The principles help protect them if they face trouble for their choice.

These rules connect to how different countries treat each other. The United Nations uses its General Assembly to study and suggest new laws. This process is part of making international law grow over time. Even though some countries might act differently, the principles provide a standard. They help guide how nations handle serious crimes. By following these ideas, the world works toward being more just. They remind us that everyone must answer for what they do.
