society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Numismatics is the scientific study or collection of currency. This field includes coins, tokens, paper money, and medals. It also covers related objects used for payment. Experts in this field are called numismatists. They do not just study coins as objects. They study money as a way to resolve debts and exchange goods. This discipline helps us understand how societies function through trade.

Money works by acting as a token or an abstraction of value. Throughout history, people have used many different materials to create money. Some materials are naturally scarce, like precious metals or cowry shells. Others are entirely artificial, such as modern fiat money. Fiat money refers to banknotes that are not backed by a physical commodity. People have also used cocoa beans, gems, and large stones. In some specific settings, even cigarettes or instant noodles have served as currency.

The history of collecting is very long. The Roman leader Augustus gave coins as gifts during the Saturnalia festival. He included old pieces of foreign money and various other designs. During the Renaissance, Petrarch became a famous collector. He was often approached by workers who wanted him to identify old coins. In 1355, Petrarch presented a collection of Roman coins to Emperor Charles IV. Because many European royalty and nobility collected coins, it earned the name "Hobby of Kings." This group included leaders like Louis XIV of France and Pope Boniface VIII.

In the 19th century, numismatics became more professional. Organizations began to form to support research and sharing. The Royal Numismatic Society was founded in 1836. It published a journal called the Numismatic Chronicle. The American Numismatic Society was founded in 1858. In the United States, the US Mint established a coin cabinet in 1838. This occurred after Adam Eckfeldt donated his personal collection. These societies helped turn a private hobby into a structured academic field.

In the 20th century, coins gained new importance in archaeology. Scholars like Guido Bruck realized coins provide essential temporal context. They help researchers understand when specific items were used. After World War II, Germany started a major project called Fundmünzen der Antike. This project aimed to register every coin found within the country. This idea of systematic registration spread to many other nations. Today, numismatists use mint records to study the rarity of specific coins.

There are several specialized subfields within numismatics. Exonumia is the study of coin-like objects. This includes tokens, medals, badges, and even credit cards. Notaphily is the specific study of paper money or banknotes. While people have always collected paper money, systematic study began in Germany during the 1920s. Another branch is scripophily. This is the study and collection of company shares and bond certificates. Collectors enjoy scripophily for the beautiful engravings on these historical documents.

Modern numismatics often focuses on the era of machine-struck coins. This period began in the mid-17th century. Researchers look for varieties and mint-made errors. They also study the results of progressive die wear. These technical details help determine how much money was produced. Studying mintage figures also reveals the sociopolitical context of a time. By looking at these small details, numismatists reconstruct the economic history of the world.
