Before explorers arrived, many different groups lived on this land. These people were nomads, which means they moved around to find food.
Spanish explorers began changing the region in the 1500s. Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva led an expedition in 1580. He named the area the New Kingdom of León. He chose this name because the mountains reminded him of the Kingdom of León in Spain.

Before European colonization, the region was home to many indigenous groups. Historians estimate that about 250 distinct nomadic groups lived here. The Spaniards referred to these groups collectively as chichimecas. These people were nomads, meaning they moved constantly to find food. They relied mainly on hunting and gathering to survive. They lived in small bands and stayed in temporary settlements called rancherías. These settlements usually housed only one or two families. The homes were semispherical huts made of interwoven branches and thatched roofs.
Archaeological remains help us understand these early inhabitants. These remains include cave paintings and carved stones. Historians have identified four main indigenous groups in the state. The Coahuiltecans lived to the west. The Alazapas lived to the north. The "Borrados" lived to the east. The Guachichiles lived to the south. Some groups lived near the Salinas River for fishing. Others lived near the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. These areas offered more temperate climates and limited agriculture. Because they were nomadic, these groups did not have permanent land claims. They also did not have the complex political hierarchies found in Mesoamerican societies.
Spanish exploration began in the early 1500s. Alvaro Núñez Cabeza de Vaca led an expedition into the territory in 1535. Later, Alberto del Canto attempted colonization in 1577. He founded Santa Lucía in what is now Monterrey. However, these early efforts failed due to raids by indigenous groups. In 1580, Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva led a new expedition. He established the New Kingdom of León in 1582. He named the region after the Kingdom of León in Spain. He noticed that both territories had similar mountainous terrains.
Colonization faced many challenges over the years. Carvajal's efforts failed again in 1588 after he was reported to the Inquisition. The region remained mostly uninhabited by Spaniards for a time. In 1596, Diego de Montemayor arrived with twelve families. He established the Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey. This was the third and final founding of the city. Life for early settlers was very difficult and marked by poverty. Most people worked in agriculture or livestock farming for their own use. Spanish settlements were also hindered by Coahuiltecan attacks. These attacks were often responses to Spanish slave raids. To help with cultural assimilation, many friars arrived to convert the natives.
