To help the displaced people, the United States paid more than $300 million into various trust funds. A 2016 investigation found radiation levels as high as 639 mrem/yr on the atoll. This is well above the safety standard for living. However, in 2017, scientists from Stanford University observed that marine life appeared to be thriving in the crater.
The military presence at Bikini Atoll was massive during the testing years. The United States assembled a support fleet of 242 ships. This fleet provided housing and workshops for more than 42,000 personnel.
