Bikini Atoll is a group of islands in the Marshall Islands. Between 1946 and 1958, the United States used these islands for nuclear testing. This included the detonation of 23 or 24 nuclear weapons. These tests happened in many ways. Some bombs were dropped from planes. Others were detonated in the air, on the reef, or underwater. The total explosive power of these tests was about 77 to 78.6 megatons of TNT. This history is a major part of the Cold War. During this time, the United States and the Soviet Union raced to build advanced bombs.

Before the testing began, the people living on Bikini had to move. In February 1946, the government asked 167 Micronesian inhabitants to relocate. They were told the tests were of great importance to humankind.

King Juda agreed to the request. Most families moved to Rongerik Atoll on March 7, 1946. This was known as Bikini Day. Rongerik was much smaller than Bikini. It did not have enough food or water to support the people. This made life very difficult for the families who moved there.

The first series of tests was called Operation Crossroads in July 1946. It included two main tests named Able and Baker. Able was dropped from an aircraft. Baker was suspended under a barge and detonated underwater.

The Baker test produced a large Wilson cloud. It also contaminated all of the target ships in the lagoon. The Navy had brought 95 ships to the lagoon for this. These included battleships, cruisers, and submarines. Chemist Glenn T. Seaborg called the Baker test the world's first nuclear disaster. Because of the radiation, a third test named Charlie was cancelled.

In 1954, a second series of tests called Operation Castle took place. The first test was named Castle Bravo. It used a new dry-fuel thermonuclear bomb design.

This explosion was much stronger than scientists expected. They predicted it would be 4 to 8 megatons. Instead, it was 15 megatons of TNT. This was about 1,000 times more powerful than the bombs used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The explosion was so big that it destroyed many measuring instruments. It was the most powerful nuclear weapon ever used by the United States.

The Castle Bravo test caused widespread radioactive contamination. Fallout spread to islands like Rongelap and Utrik.

People on these islands became very sick from radiation. Many had to be moved to Kwajalein for medical help. The tests made the soil and water on Bikini unfit for living. People could not safely farm or fish there anymore. The United States has paid over $300 million into trust funds for the islanders. Even though the land was changed, scientists saw marine life thriving in the crater in 2017.

The combined explosive power of these weapons reached about 77 to 78.6 megatons of TNT. This period of testing was part of the Cold War. Rongerik was only one-sixth the size of Bikini Atoll. It had an inadequate supply of food and water. The Navy provided a few weeks of supplies, but these soon proved insufficient for the families.

The unexpected strength of the Castle Bravo explosion caused massive radioactive contamination. The fallout spread across a wide area.

It deposited radioactive material as far away as Australia, India, Japan, and parts of Europe. On nearby islands like Rongelap, the ground was coated in ash and irradiated calcium debris. Residents of Rongelap and Rongerik were evacuated by servicemen two days after the blast. People on Utrik Atoll were not evacuated for three days. Many inhabitants experienced acute radiation syndrome. Symptoms included skin irritation, vomiting, and fatigue. The United States later faced accusations regarding the medical study of these residents.

The long-term effects of the tests changed the environment of Bikini Atoll. The soil and water became contaminated, making it unsafe for subsistence farming or fishing. These tests, including later operations like Redwing and Hardtack, rendered the atoll unfit for habitation. To help the displaced people, the United States paid more than $300 million into various trust funds. A 2016 investigation found radiation levels as high as 639 mrem/yr on the atoll. This is well above the safety standard for living. However, in 2017, scientists from Stanford University observed that marine life appeared to be thriving in the crater.

The military presence at Bikini Atoll was massive during the testing years. The United States assembled a support fleet of 242 ships. This fleet provided housing and workshops for more than 42,000 personnel.

Seabees, which are Navy construction battalions, built many facilities on the islands. They built bunkers, steel towers for cameras, and floating dry docks. They even built social areas like the "Cross Spikes Club" for enlisted servicemen. These facilities were necessary to support the complex work of measuring and evaluating nuclear explosions.
