Nuclear engineering

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nuclear engineering is a special way of building systems. These systems use energy from tiny parts of matter. Most engineers use this energy to make electricity. This is a very important job for the world. Today, 439 nuclear reactors work in 31 different countries. These reactors provide 10 percent of the world's energy.

There are two main ways to release this energy. The first way is called nuclear fission. In fission, tiny parts of an atom are pulled apart. This releases energy called nuclear binding energy. The second way is called nuclear fusion. In fusion, tiny parts are brought together. Both ways make much more energy than burning coal or oil. For example, 1 gram of uranium makes as much energy as 3 tons of coal. This process does not add carbon dioxide to our air.

People have studied these reactions for a long time. The first known natural nuclear reaction happened 1.7 billion years ago in Oklo, Gabon. Scientists later discovered fission in 1938. A team of physicists built the first artificial reactor called CP-1. They wanted to study fission carefully. Later, the X-10 Graphite Reactor was built as part of the Manhattan Project. These early steps helped us understand how to use atoms for power.

Making electricity from atoms has a long history of firsts. The first reactor to make electricity was the EBR-I. It was built near Arco, Idaho, in 1951. A later reactor in the BORAX series sent power to the town of Arco in 1955. The Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant was the first to connect to an electrical grid in 1954. The Shippingport Atomic Power Station followed in 1957. These plants showed how nuclear power could work for everyone.

Nuclear engineers have many different jobs to do. Some design new types of reactors. Others study how heat moves to make steam. This steam turns a turbine to make electricity. Some engineers work in medicine to help sick people. Others use nuclear power to move ships or even travel in space. In the United States, nearly 100,000 people work in this industry. Many more people find jobs because of this work.
