Some of these animals liked to dig. Others could hop like a rabbit. Some even had claws on their arms.
Their teeth grew all the time. This helped them eat tough plants. They lived there for a very long time.
Then, the world began to change. New animals arrived from the north. The climate changed too.

Others suggest they ate plants covered in abrasive volcanic particles. These particles would otherwise wear teeth down quickly.
Their evolutionary history is quite complex. Notoungulates likely originated from "condylarth" ancestors that migrated from North America. They reached their highest level of diversity during the Eocene and Oligocene epochs. During the Miocene, about 45% of their family diversity went extinct. This included families like Homalodotheriidae and Leontiniidae. Later, the group faced new challenges during the Great American Interchange. This event allowed mammals from North America to enter South America.
DNA and collagen studies have revealed their true family tree. Analysis suggests they are closely related to litopterns. They are also considered a sister group to the perissodactyls. Perissodactyls are odd-toed ungulates like horses, tapirs, and rhinoceroses. Together, these groups form a clade called Panperissodactyla. This confirms that notoungulates were true ungulates. This scientific finding sometimes conflicts with older studies based on physical shapes.
Notoungulates had very different ways of moving and eating. Some typotheres had body forms similar to rodents or rabbits. Some even moved with a bounding motion like a rabbit. The mesotheriids may have acted like modern wombats by digging. The Homalodotherium was quite unique among the toxodontids. It had claws on its forelimbs. It likely reared up on its hindlegs to feed, much like a chalicothere.

The end of the notoungulates was a gradual decline. Their numbers dropped during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. This decline was likely caused by both climate change and competition with North American animals. One specific member, Mixotoxodon, actually moved into Central and North America. Its fossils have been found as far north as Texas. Eventually, the last toxodontids disappeared about 12,000 years ago. They vanished during the Late Pleistocene megafauna extinctions. This period saw the loss of many large mammals across the Americas. Some researchers suggest the arrival of humans may have played a role in these extinctions.
