Norway has vast reserves of petroleum, natural gas, minerals, lumber, seafood, and fresh water. The petroleum industry is particularly vital. It accounts for approximately one quarter of the gross domestic product (GDP). 
Norway is a highly active participant in international organizations. It was a founding member of the United Nations.
Throughout its history, Norway has faced significant challenges. The Black Death arrived in 1349 and killed one third of the population within a year. By 1400, the population had fallen to half of its original size. The country also faced occupation during the Second World War. Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Norway in April 1940.
