This classification is important because it helps scientists track and protect this specific group of animals. Today, northern giraffes are considered the least numerous and most endangered of all giraffe species. As of 2016, the global population of all giraffes was estimated at about 97,000 individuals.

Physical features help us identify the northern giraffe from other types, such as the southern giraffe. The most noticeable difference is found on the forehead. Northern giraffes possess ossicones, which are the horn-like protuberances on their heads. These ossicones are larger and longer than those found on southern giraffes. Furthermore, male northern giraffes have a unique third feature. They possess a third cylindrical ossicone located in the center of the head, just above the eyes. Modern science has changed how we understand giraffe biology through advanced technology. In 2021, researchers conducted a whole genome sequencing study. There are currently three recognized living subspecies of the northern giraffe, each with unique traits. The Kordofan giraffe, or G. c. antiquorum, lives in southern Chad, the Central African Republic, northern Cameroon, and northeastern DR Congo. Its spots can be found below the hocks and on the insides of the legs, and males have a median lump. The Nubian giraffe, or G. c. camelopardalis, is found in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. It features chestnut-colored spots surrounded by white lines, though its underside lacks spots. Finally, the West African giraffe, or G. c. peralta, has a lighter pelage, or coat, with red lobe-shaped blotches.

One subspecies is no longer with us: the Senegalese giraffe, or G. c. senegalensis. This animal once lived in parts of Senegal, The Gambia, Mali, and Mauritania. It was characterized by dark brown patches with clear contours and a body of almost uniform size. However, this subspecies became extinct by the 1970s. This loss is part of a larger history of local extinctions that have shaped where these animals live today. Their current habitats include various savannahs, shrublands, and woodlands across Africa.

Conservation efforts are actively working to rebuild these isolated populations. In East Africa, the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation have moved Nubian giraffes to several locations. These include Kidepo National Park, Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, Murchison Falls National Park, and Lake Mburo National Park. In Central Africa, nearly 2,400 Kordofan giraffes live across Chad, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the DR Congo. In Niger, conservationists have worked to create a second population of West African giraffes. In 2018, eight giraffes were moved to the Gadabedji Reserve, followed by four more in 2022.

The history of the northern giraffe spans millions of years and many different climates. Fossil evidence shows that their earliest ranges were in Chad during the late Pliocene. During the early Pleistocene of the Quaternary period, they lived in Algeria. They were once widespread across North Africa, including Morocco, Libya, and Egypt. However, the drying climate of the Sahara made these areas uninhabitable. This environmental shift caused the giraffes to go extinct in those regions around AD 600. Their history serves as a reminder of how changing climates can reshape the natural world.
