The African wild ass has a tough digestive system. This allows them to eat dry things like bark, leaves, and grasses. They can also pull moisture out of their food very well. While they need water, they can survive for a long time without it. They must drink at least once every three days. Their large ears are also very helpful. These ears help them hear distant sounds and help their bodies stay cool.

Scientists have studied the history of these animals for a long time. The genus Equus, which includes horses and asses, came from older animals like Dinohippus.

Later, around 2000 BC, they were even used to pull chariots. Today, we try to help the wild ones stay safe. A special group of Somali wild asses lives in the Yotvata Hai-Bar Nature Reserve in Israel. This reserve was started in 1968 to protect desert animals. Protecting them helps ensure their history continues.

These leg stripes resemble the patterns found on a zebra. Another subspecies, the Atlas wild ass (Equus africanus atlanticus), lived in the region of the Atlas Mountains. This extinct subspecies had a darker gray coat and sometimes featured doubled shoulder stripes. The domestic donkey (Equus africanus asinus) is a widespread subspecies found globally due to human domestication.

Because vegetation is spread thin, they live in loose groups rather than the tight herds seen in wild horses. Mature males defend territories of approximately 23 square kilometers. They mark these areas with dung heaps to signal their presence. While males defend these ranges, they often tolerate intruders as subordinates to avoid constant conflict.

Their hooves grow very quickly to compensate for the wear of the rocky terrain. They also possess very loud voices.
