It is a place with a very strong and unique feeling.

When the ice melted, it left behind many lakes and flat plains. One area is the Humberhead Levels, which is a large, flat area of farmland. The Pennines are a huge range of hills that run through the middle. Many call these hills the "backbone of England."

Later, the Industrial Revolution changed everything. This was a time when many new ways of making things were invented. Huge factories and new machines grew quickly. Because of this, many big cities began to grow. These changes also brought new ways for people to work together. This period helped shape the culture and the way people live now.

Many people live in busy urban areas across the region.

You can see the history in the buildings, too. Some are made of bright red sandstone or cream-colored stone. The land is also quite treeless in many spots. To help this, the government wants to plant 50 million trees. This new Northern Forest will help change the look of the land.

It is often called "The North." The area is bounded by Scotland to the north. To the west lies the Irish Sea and a small border with Wales. The North Sea forms the eastern boundary. The southern border is a subject of much debate. Some people use geographic features like the River Mersey or River Trent to define it. Others look at historical boundaries to decide where the North begins.

The physical landscape was shaped by massive ice sheets during the Pleistocene era. These glaciers moved across the land and carved deep, craggy valleys into the central uplands. When the ice melted, it left behind large amounts of fluvio-glacial material. This created lowland areas like the Cheshire and Solway Plains. On the eastern side of the Pennines, a former glacial lake formed the Humberhead Levels. This is a large area of fertile fenland that drains into the Humber.

The Pennines are a major upland range in the region. Many people call these hills the "backbone of England." They stretch from the Tyne Gap to the Peak District. The North also contains several important national parks. These include the Peak District, the Lake District, the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, and Northumberland National Park. The Lake District is home to England's highest peak, Scafell Pike.

This area also contains Windermere and Wastwater, which is the deepest lake in the country.

History has deeply influenced the culture and economy of the North. The region once corresponded to the territory of the Old North and the medieval Anglian Kingdom of Northumbria. Later, the Industrial Revolution brought massive changes. Many important innovations began in Northern England during this time. The region's cities became centers for political shifts, such as trade unionism. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, heavy industry dominated the economy. This period of rapid change helped build the large urban areas seen today.

Today, the North is characterized by significant urban populations.

In the 2021 census, the three statistical regions had a combined population of 15.5 million. These regions are the North East, the North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber. Most people live in or around major cities. The Greater Manchester Built-Up Area is the largest in the region with 2,553,379 people.

Other large urban areas include West Yorkshire, Liverpool, Tyneside, and Sheffield. In 2011, 86% of the Northern population lived in urban areas.

The culture of the North is shaped by centuries of immigration, invasion, and labor. This history has resulted in many distinctive accents, dialects, music, and cuisine. The architecture also reflects the local geology. You can see bright red sandstone in Chester and cream-buff Yorkstone in other areas. The region is currently one of the most treeless areas in Europe. To address this, the government plans to plant over 50 million trees in a new Northern Forest.

Economic changes in the late 20th century have created a "North-South divide." Industrial decline in the second half of the 20th century caused hardship in the North. This led to more deprivation than in Southern England. However, recent urban renewal projects have helped. The transition to a service economy has led to strong growth in some parts of the North. This ongoing economic and cultural shift remains a key part of the region's identity.
