In 1812, the Russian-American Company set up a trading post at Fort Ross.

History changed quickly during the Gold Rush between 1848 and 1855. This event brought more than 300,000 new people to the area. Most of these people chose to live in the north. In 1859, a politician named Andrés Pico tried to split the state. He wanted to create a new area called the Territory of Colorado in the south.

Although the plan did not pass, it showed how divided the state felt. Today, the region is a major center for many different things.
