The region is a center for global trade and finance. You can see this in the busy streets of New York City. The area also features complex transportation systems. These include the New York City Subway and large airports like JFK. 


Long before European arrival, the land was home to many people. Anthropologists call this area the "Northeastern Woodlands." This cultural region covered much of the present-day Northeast and parts of Canada. Many tribes lived here, including the Iroquois nations and Algonquian peoples. In the early 1600s, European fishermen arrived to dry codfish. Later, the Pilgrims arrived from England in 1620. They traveled on the ship Mayflower. They landed in present-day Massachusetts to practice their religion freely. 
European settlement changed the map of the region. In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazzano explored the Atlantic shoreline. In 1609, Henry Hudson explored the area of New York. He claimed it for the Netherlands. This area became known as New Netherland. The Dutch established New Amsterdam, which is now New York City. In 1664, England took control of this land. It became the colonies of New York and New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, William Penn founded a colony in 1681. He wanted to provide religious freedom for Quakers. 
The Northeast was also the birthplace of the United States. All the states in this region were part of the original Thirteen Colonies. The American Revolution began in Massachusetts. The first battles were at Lexington and Concord. Many major battles followed in the Northeast. For example, the Battle of Trenton took place in New Jersey. 

During the 19th century, the Northeast led the American Industrial Revolution. This began in the textile mills of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. In eastern Pennsylvania, coal and steel fueled manufacturing. This industrial boom helped the region grow very fast. New railroads and canals were built to move goods. Coastal cities like Boston and Philadelphia became major trade ports. However, the region also faced difficult times. The American Civil War caused great conflict. The Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania was a major turning point.
