Diamonds are mined at Lichtenburg, Christiana, and Bloemhof. About 85% of all money-making activities happen between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom. Klerksdorp serves as the economic heart of the province.
Agriculture and tourism also support the region. The northern and western parts contain many sheep farms. There are also cattle and game ranches in these areas. The eastern and southern parts are used for growing crops. These regions produce maize, sunflowers, tobacco, cotton, and citrus fruits. 
Demographics show a diverse population of over 3 million people.
