In 1991, some researchers met the tribe. They offered coconuts to the people. It was a peaceful moment. But the tribe wants to be left alone. They still live in their own way today.

North Sentinel Island is a unique place in the Bay of Bengal. It sits within the Andaman Islands, which are part of India. The island has a shape that is roughly like a square.

It is surrounded by coral reefs and lacks any natural harbors for boats. Most of the land is covered in thick, green forests. You would see white sand beaches circling the entire island. The ground rises up from the shore to a middle area.

A group called the Sentinelese lives on this island. They live in voluntary isolation, which means they choose to be left alone. They often defend their home from anyone who comes near. They have been known to shoot arrows at boats or even low-flying helicopters. Because of this, the Indian government has made strict laws. It is illegal to travel to the island or go near it. The Indian Navy patrols the area to keep people away. This rule protects the tribe from diseases they might not be able to fight.

People have tried to visit the island many times in history. In 1771, a ship called the Diligent saw many lights from the island. In 1867, a merchant ship named the Nineveh wrecked on a nearby reef. The people on that ship had to defend themselves against attacks. Later, in 1880, a man named Maurice Vidal Portman led an expedition there. He found small villages and paths in the jungle. His group took six people back to Port Blair. Sadly, some of those people became very sick and died.

There have been a few times when people met the tribe peacefully. In 1991, a team led by Triloknath Pandit visited the island. A woman named Madhumala Chattopadhyay was part of this group. She used special words to invite the islanders to take coconuts. For a short time, the people accepted the gifts from the researchers.

Other researchers also dropped off bananas and coconuts as gifts. These visits eventually stopped to protect the tribe's way of life.

The island is also home to many interesting living things. The forests have large trees like the Malabar silk-cotton tree. You might find Indian boars living in the woods there. The Sentinelese likely use these animals for food. In the water, there are coral reefs and mangroves. The area is a very important place for many different birds. It is also a home for coconut crabs and sea turtles. Even after a large earthquake in 2004, the island and its people survived.

North Sentinel Island is a unique landmass located in the Bay of Bengal. It is part of the Andaman Islands, which is an Indian archipelago. The island sits north of South Sentinel Island. It is also west of Port Blair and the village of Wandoor. The island has a roughly square shape.

Most of the land is covered in thick, tropical forests. A narrow, white-sand beach circles the entire coastline. Beyond the beach, the ground rises to a central area. The island is surrounded by extensive coral reefs. These reefs extend up to 5 kilometers from the shore. Because of these reefs, the island has no natural harbors.

The island is home to the Sentinelese. They are an indigenous tribe living in voluntary isolation. This means they choose to live without contact from the outside world. They often defend this isolation with force. They have been known to shoot arrows at approaching boats and low-flying helicopters. These encounters have caused injuries and deaths. To protect the tribe, the Indian government has strict laws. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation 1956 prohibits travel to the island. It also forbids approaching closer than 5 nautical miles. This rule protects the Sentinelese from mainland infectious diseases. They likely have no acquired immunity to these illnesses. The Indian Navy patrols the area to enforce these rules.

History shows many attempts to interact with the island. In 1771, a ship called the Diligent saw many lights near the island. In 1867, the merchant ship Nineveh wrecked on a nearby reef. The survivors landed on the beach and had to defend themselves. In 1880, Maurice Vidal Portman led an expedition to the island. He found paths and small, abandoned villages. His group took six Sentinelese people to Port Blair. Sadly, the elderly couple died from sickness. The four children were sent back to the island with gifts. Later, Portman visited several more times between 1885 and 1887.

There have been rare moments of peaceful contact. In 1991, Triloknath Pandit led a team to the island. Anthropologist Madhumala Chattopadhyay was part of this group. She used tribal words to invite the islanders to take coconuts.

For a short time, the islanders accepted the food. Other researchers, like Anstice Justin, also visited to drop off gifts. They exchanged bananas and coconuts with the tribe. These researchers even planted coconut saplings together. However, these visits eventually stopped. This was due to ethical concerns for the tribe's well-being. Government policies also changed to limit contact.

Recent years have seen more difficult encounters. In 2006, two fishermen were killed after their boat drifted too close. The Indian government did not prosecute the tribe for this. In 2018, an American missionary named John Allen Chau attempted to visit. He wanted to spread Christianity to the Sentinelese. He paid local fishermen to take him to the island. Chau was killed during this illegal trip. In March 2025, another person made an unauthorized landing. This individual called himself a "thrill seeker." He left behind items like Diet Coke and collected sand samples. He was later arrested by the Indian Police.

The geography of the island changed significantly in 2004. A massive Indian Ocean earthquake occurred that year. The earthquake tilted the tectonic plate under the island. This caused the island to lift by about 1 meter. Because of this, much of the surrounding coral reef became dry land. This event also united Constance Islet with the main island. The island remains a vital habitat for many species. The forests contain bulletwood and Malabar silk-cotton trees. Indian boars live in the woods and serve as a food source. The area is also a globally Important Bird Area.

The marine ecosystem around the island is very important. Mangroves grow along the shores near the coral reefs. The reefs experienced bleaching during the 1998 El Niño event. However, they have shown signs of regeneration since then. Many creatures live in these waters. Coconut crabs are found on the island. Sea turtles also inhabit the area. Divers have even reported sightings of sharks. The island remains one of the most isolated places on Earth.
