They used the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. This engine had a supercharger, which is a tool that helps engines work better. The new engine made the plane much faster. It could also fly very high.
The P-51D was the most famous version. It had a bubble canopy, which is a clear glass cover for the pilot. It also had six machine guns.

North American Aviation President "Dutch" Kindelberger proposed building a modern fighter instead of making older designs. The project moved incredibly fast. The prototype, known as the NA-73X, was completed only 102 days after the contract was signed. 
The Mustang went through several important developmental stages. The early Mustang Mk I used the Allison V-1710 engine. This engine had a single-stage supercharger, which limited how well the plane performed at high altitudes. To fix this, a project called the Rolls-Royce Mustang X was started in mid-1942. This version replaced the Allison engine with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 65 engine. 
The most famous version was the P-51D. This definitive model featured a "bubble" canopy, which gave the pilot a much clearer view. It was powered by the Packard V-1650-7, a license-built version of the Merlin 66 engine. For defense and attack, it was armed with six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) AN/M2 Browning machine guns. During World War II, Mustang pilots were incredibly effective. They claimed to have destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft during the conflict.
The Mustang's service extended far beyond its early years. During the Korean War, the aircraft was redesignated as the F-51. It served as the main fighter for the United States until jet fighters like the F-86 Sabre arrived. After that, it transitioned into a specialized fighter-bomber role.
