A big war happened in the hot desert. Many lands fought there. Some groups were called the Allies. Other groups were called the Axis.
A big war took place in North Africa. This happened from 1940 to 1943. It was fought between the Allies and the Axis powers. The Allies included the British and many other groups. The Axis included Italy and Germany.
At first, the British fought in Libya. They won many battles and took many prisoners.

The Allies had a secret way to win. They used code-breaking to read Axis notes. This helped them know the enemy's plans. In 1942, the United States joined the war. They helped the Allies in North Africa.
Later, the British Eighth Army won a big battle. This was the Second Battle of El Alamein. The Allies then pushed the Axis forces into Tunisia. In May 1943, the Axis forces surrendered. This ended the war in North Africa.
The North African campaign was a major part of World War II. It took place in North Africa from June 1940 to May 1943. Two sides fought for control of the land. These were the Allies and the Axis powers. The Allies were led by the British Commonwealth and people from Europe. The Axis included Italy and Germany. This war was important for the whole world. It changed the course of the conflict in Europe.
Fighting began when the British launched raids on Italian Libya. In June 1940, British troops crossed the border into Libya. They captured a place called Fort Capuzzo. Soon, the Italian army fought back and took Sidi Barrani. The British responded with a plan called Operation Compass. They attacked in December 1940 and took the area back.
Germany sent help to Italy in February 1941. They sent a group called the Afrika Korps to stop an Axis defeat. This force was led by a general named Erwin Rommel. The fighting in the desert moved back and forth many times. The Allies had a secret advantage during this time. British code-breakers used a system called Ultra to read enemy messages.
New groups joined the fight as time went on. The United States entered the war in December 1941. They began helping in North Africa by May 1942. In November 1942, a plan called Operation Torch began. This involved Anglo-American landings in North-West Africa. The Eighth Army was a large group of soldiers. It included troops from Britain, Australia, India, New Zealand, and South Africa. They worked together to push the Axis forces back.
One of the most important moments was the Second Battle of El Alamein. This happened in October 1942. A leader named Bernard Montgomery led the Eighth Army to victory. This battle forced the remaining Axis troops into Tunisia.
The North African campaign was a major theater of World War II. It lasted from 11 June 1940 to 13 May 1943. The fighting occurred across North African deserts and territories. This included Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Two main groups fought for control of this region. These were the Allies and the Axis powers. The Allies were led by the British Commonwealth and exiles from occupied Europe. The Axis included Italy and Nazi Germany.
The conflict began after Italy joined Germany in the war. On 11 June 1940, British forces launched raids into Italian Libya. Shortly after, the British 11th Hussars and the 1st Royal Tank Regiment captured Fort Capuzzo. The Italians then launched a counter-offensive into Egypt. They captured the area of Sidi Barrani in September 1940. The British responded with Operation Compass in December 1940. This operation successfully recaptured Sidi Barrani and destroyed the Italian 10th Army. During this period, the British took 130,000 prisoners of war.
To prevent a total Axis defeat, Germany sent reinforcements in February 1941. This movement was called Operation Sonnenblume. Germany formed a specialized motorized force known as the Afrika Korps. Erwin Rommel was placed in command of this force. While the Germans sent help, most of the fighting was still done by Italian forces. The war became a series of advances and retreats across the desert.
Control of the desert often depended on specific locations. The port of Tobruk was a vital fortress. During the war, the Axis captured Tobruk in June 1942. This gave them a major advantage in the desert. However, the Axis faced difficult supply chains. Their supplies had to travel long distances from Tripoli. They also had to bypass the British-held port of Tobruk.
A secret tool helped the Allies win the campaign. British code-breakers used a system called Ultra. This allowed the Allies to read secret Axis messages. For a long time, the Axis used a compromised "Black Code." This meant they could read some British communications. However, by June 1942, the Allies stopped using that code. This prevented the Axis from learning about British strengths and plans.
The tide turned during the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. The British Eighth Army was led by Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery. This army was a massive group from many nations. It included troops from Britain, Australia, India, New Zealand, and South Africa. It also included a Free French brigade. The Eighth Army decisively defeated the German and Italian forces. This victory forced the remaining Axis troops to retreat into Tunisia.
New forces joined the struggle in late 1942. The United States entered the war in December 1941. In November 1942, the Allies launched Operation Torch. This was an Anglo-American landing in North-West Africa. These landings helped trap the Axis forces in Tunisia. By May 1943, the Allies had surrounded about 250,000 German and Italian personnel. These forces were forced to surrender. This victory led to the downfall of the Fascist government in Italy. It also eliminated Germany's main ally in Europe.
