North

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

North is one of the four cardinal directions on Earth. It is the direct opposite of south. It also sits at a right angle to east and west. In Western culture, north is often treated as the fundamental direction. This means it is used to define all other directions. On most maps, north is placed at the top. This convention helps people understand their orientation quickly.

Navigating toward north requires specific tools and measurements. If you use a compass, you set a bearing or azimuth of 0° or 360°. Traveling directly north follows a line known as a meridian. However, there is a difference between true north and magnetic north. A magnetic compass points toward magnetic north. The difference between these two points is called magnetic declination. Travelers must often compensate for this error to stay on course. Some maps even show grid north, which follows the lines of a map projection.

Languages around the world have unique ways of naming north. The word north comes from a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "left" or "below." This is because north is to the left when facing the rising sun. In Greek, the word for north is linked to Boreas. Boreas was a wind-god who personified the north wind. The word Arctic comes from the Greek word for the constellation Ursa Major. This constellation is also called the seven plow oxen. In Romanian, an old word for north means midnight. In Hungarian, the word for north is linked to the word for night.

History shows that not every culture viewed north as the "top" direction. While Western maps place north at the top, Chinese and Islamic cultures often put south at the top. In Polynesia, people used prevailing local winds to define their cardinal points. The Greek astronomer Ptolemy helped establish the idea that north should be "up" on maps. Some historians suggest he did this for convenience. The most well-known places in his world were in the northern hemisphere. Placing them in the upper right-hand corner made them easier to study on flat maps.

In astronomy, north has a very specific definition. On a rotating object, north is often the side that rotates counterclockwise. However, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) uses a different rule. They define the geographic north pole based on the celestial hemisphere. This is measured relative to the invariable plane of the Solar System. This rule is important because some objects rotate differently. For example, Uranus rotates in a retrograde direction. This means its spin looks clockwise when viewed from the IAU north.

North is often associated with cold climates and high latitudes. This is because much of the world's populated land is in the Northern Hemisphere. The Arctic Circle is a major geographic feature in these regions. It passes through the Arctic Ocean and several countries. These include Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. It also travels through the United States in Alaska and Canada. Other areas include Greenland, Denmark, and Iceland.

Even in daily speech, north serves as a primary reference point. In Western popular culture, people often use "north of" as a metaphor. For example, an American might say a population is "north of 7 billion." This means the number is greater than 7 billion. It uses the idea of north being "up" to describe something increasing. This shows how a simple direction can influence how we describe the world around us.
