Every object has its own patterns of motion. These patterns are called modes. In a mode, all parts move together at the same speed.

A tall building or a bridge can move in these patterns. Even tiny pieces of a rock can shake this way. These shakes happen at a set speed. This speed is called a natural frequency. Each pattern moves on its own. One pattern does not start another one. This makes the world move in many ways at once.
