A French astronomer named Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille created this constellation. He worked in the years 1751 to 1752. During a two-year stay at the Cape of Good Hope, he catalogued 10,000 stars. He wanted to honor the Age of Enlightenment by naming stars after tools. He originally called this group l’Équerre et la Règle. This name meant "the Square and Rule." By 1763, the name was shortened to the Latin Norma.

Some stars in Norma are truly huge and bright. Mu Normae is one of the most luminous stars known. It might shine 500,000 times brighter than our Sun. Another star, Gamma2 Normae, is a yellow giant. It is about 10 times wider than our Sun. We also know of four star systems in Norma that have planets. One planet, orbiting HD 330075, is a hot Jupiter. This planet completes a full trip around its star every 3.4 days.

Norma also holds some of the largest things in the universe. It contains the Norma Cluster, also called Abell 3627. This is one of the most massive galaxy clusters known. It is ten times more massive than an average cluster. Scientists think this cluster might be the Great Attractor. This massive object may be pulling our local group of galaxies toward it. The history of Norma begins with the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille. Between 1751 and 1752, Lacaille stayed at the Cape of Good Hope. During those two years, he observed and catalogued 10,000 southern stars. He created 14 new constellations to fill uncharted regions of the southern sky. Most of these constellations honored scientific instruments from the Age of Enlightenment. Lacaille originally named this group "l’Équerre et la Règle," which means "the Square and Rule." In his 1756 star map, he depicted Norma, Circinus, and Triangulum Australe as a set of drafting tools. By 1763, the name was shortened and Latinized to Norma.

Many interesting stars reside within the borders of Norma. Four bright stars—Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and Eta—form a square shape in a field of fainter stars. Gamma2 Normae is the brightest star in the constellation with an apparent magnitude of 4.0. It is a yellow giant located about 129 light-years from Earth. This star is 10 times the diameter of the Sun and shines with 45 times its luminosity. Another star, Mu Normae, is a blue supergiant. It is one of the most luminous stars known to science. It may be as much as 500,000 times more luminous than the Sun.

Some stars in Norma are part of complex systems. Epsilon Normae is a spectroscopic binary, which means two stars orbit each other. These are two blue-white main sequence stars that orbit every 3.26 days. Iota1 Normae is also a multiple star system. It contains an AB pair of stars that orbit each other every 26.9 years. These stars are roughly 2.7 times as massive as the Sun. Other stars in the constellation show changing brightness. For example, S Normae is a Cepheid variable. This is a star that changes in brightness over a period of 9.75411 days.

Norma is home to several fascinating deep-sky objects. The Milky Way galaxy passes through this constellation via the Norma Arm. This location allows us to see eight different open clusters. An open cluster is a group of stars that stay close together. The brightest of these is NGC 6087, which is about 3,300 light-years away. You can also find the Ant Nebula, known as Mz 3. This is a bipolar planetary nebula that looks like an hourglass.

One of the most significant objects in Norma is the Norma Cluster, or Abell 3627. This is one of the most massive galaxy clusters known to exist. It is ten times more massive than the average galaxy cluster. Scientists believe this cluster might be the Great Attractor. The Great Attractor is a massive object that pulls other things toward it. It is thought to be pulling the Local Group and the Hydra–Centaurus Supercluster toward its location. This movement happens at speeds between 600 and 1,000 kilometers per second.

Finally, astronomers have discovered planets within the Norma constellation. There are four known star systems here that harbor planets. For example, the star HD 330075 is orbited by a "hot Jupiter." This is a large planet that orbits very close to its star. It completes one full trip every 3.4 days. Another planet orbits HD 142415 every 386 days. These discoveries help scientists understand how different solar systems work. Norma remains a vital area for studying everything from small planets to massive galaxy clusters.
