Norilsk is a large city in Russia.
It sits in a very cold part of the world. The city is north of the Arctic Circle. The ground there is permafrost. This means the soil stays frozen all year.
Many valuable metals are under the ground here. People mine for nickel, copper, and cobalt. They also find platinum and palladium.
Working in the mines is a big job. The city grew because of this work. Long ago, many people were forced to work there. They lived in camps. Many people died from the hard work and the cold.
Today, many different people live in Norilsk. Some people eat a food called stroganina. This is raw, sliced fish.

Norilsk is a very large industrial city in Russia.
It sits in the Krasnoyarsk Krai region. The city is located south of the western Taymyr Peninsula. It is about 90 km east of the Yenisey River. Norilsk is also 300 km north of the Arctic Circle.
This means it is in a very cold part of the world. It is the second-largest city inside the Arctic Circle. It is also the northernmost city with more than 180,000 people.
The city is famous because of what is under the ground. It sits on top of some of the largest nickel deposits on Earth.
Mining and smelting ore are the main jobs there. Workers mine for nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum, and palladium. They also mine for coal. In 2004, the city grew by adding two satellite cities. These are called Talnakh and Kayerkan.
Oganer is also a suburb of the city. The city is part of a continuous permafrost zone. This means the ground stays frozen all year.
People knew about the minerals in this area for a long time. Some people found copper tools during the Bronze Age. In the 16th and 17th centuries, people used copper from here. They lived in a city called Mangazeya. The city of Norilsk was officially founded in 1935. This was when the Norillag system was established.
At first, the area had only small coal mines. Later, the Norilsk Plant was built and finished by 1939. The first converter matte was produced in 1942. The mines soon became a huge source of nickel for Russia.
The history of the city was very hard for many people. Between 1935 and 1956, many people were forced to work in camps. These people were part of the Norillag system. About 16,806 prisoners died due to hard labor, hunger, and the cold.
Many died during World War II when food was scarce. Today, there are memorials to remember them. One is called the Norilsk Golgotha.
It sits on the slope of Mount Schmidtikh. Other countries have also built monuments for their people who died there.
Many different kinds of people live in Norilsk today. There are about 176,735 permanent residents. If you count temporary workers, there are up to 220,000 people.
The people come from many places like Russia, Azerbaijan, and Ukraine. They also have roots in Tatar, Bashkir, and Kazakh cultures. Some people eat a traditional food called stroganina.
This is raw, sliced fish. Because it is a special industrial site, foreign citizens need permission to visit. The city remains a closed city for travelers.
Norilsk is a major industrial city located in the Krasnoyarsk Krai region of Russia.
It sits south of the western Taymyr Peninsula. The city is about 90 km east of the Yenisey River. It is also 1,500 km north of Krasnoyarsk. Norilsk is located 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. This makes it the world's northernmost city with more than 180,000 inhabitants. It is also the second-largest city inside the Arctic Circle, following Murmansk. The city sits within a continuous permafrost zone. This means the ground stays frozen year-round.
The city's economy relies on the massive mineral deposits found in the Siberian Craton. These deposits include nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum, palladium, and coal. Mining and smelting ore are the primary industries. The process involves extracting raw ore from the ground and processing it. For example, the Talnakh district serves as a major site for ore enrichment.
Enriched ore emulsion is then pumped to metallurgy plants. The Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant was built to process these materials. Work on this complex began in 1971 and finished in 1981. Some Finnish companies helped automate the copper and nickel smelters there.
Norilsk is organized into several distinct administrative parts. The city is divided into three geographically separate districts. These are the Tsentralny District, Talnakh, and Kayerkan. The Tsentralny District includes the suburb of Oganer.
The jurisdiction of the city also extends to the settlement of Snezhnogorsk. Snezhnogorsk was founded in 1963 for workers of the Ust-Khantai Hydroelectric Power Station. Because of its industrial importance, Norilsk is a closed city. Foreign citizens must obtain special permission to visit the area.
Human knowledge of the region's minerals dates back to the Bronze Age. Archaeologists found copper smelting equipment near Lake Pyasino. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the city of Mangazeya used copper from these deposits.
The modern city was founded in the late 1920s. However, its official foundation is traditionally dated to 1935. This was when the Norillag system of labor camps was established. The first building in Norilsk was a log cabin built in 1921. This cabin is now a historical monument near the Norilsk Museum.
The history of Norilsk includes a very difficult period for many people. Between 1935 and 1956, the Norillag system used forced labor to build the city. According to archives, 16,806 prisoners died during these years. They died from forced labor, starvation, and intense cold. Fatalities were especially high during World War II from 1942 to 1944.
To remember this past, several memorials exist. The Norilsk Golgotha memorial complex sits on Mount Schmidtikh. It houses mass graves of the prisoners who helped found the city.
Today, Norilsk has a permanent population of 176,735 people as of 2024. If you include temporary inhabitants, the population can reach 220,000. The population is ethnically diverse. People include Russians, Azerbaijanis, Ukrainians, Tatars, Bashkirs, Nogais, Lezgins, Kazakhs, Ossetians, Chuvash, and Kyrgyz.
Many residents moved to the city during the second half of the 20th century. Life expectancy in Norilsk is about 10 years lower than the Russian average. This average was around 69 years in 2013.
The city faces significant environmental and industrial challenges. In June 2020, a diesel fuel spill occurred at an NTEK power plant. This spill released 20,000 tons of fuel. It polluted hundreds of square kilometers of the local ecosystem.
Mining also carries risks for the workers. In 2005, there were 2.4 accidents per 1,000 workers. However, the company Norilsk Nickel reported a 60% reduction in lost time injuries since 2013. The city remains a vital but complex part of the global mineral supply chain.
