His career grew as he served the Mughal emperors. He worked for Emperor Aurangzeb for many years. After Aurangzeb died in 1707, things became very confusing in the empire. He worked to remove the powerful Sayyid brothers from the court. Because of his help, he became the Grand Vizier. This role is like being a prime minister.

Asaf Jah faced many hard jobs as a leader. In 1714, he was made the Viceroy of the Deccan. This meant he ruled over six different provinces in southern India. He was very good at managing money and organizing laws. He also used clever ideas to work with local groups. He even worked with Maratha generals to keep peace. His family had deep roots in the Mughal administration. His grandfather, Kilich Khan, originally came from Samarkand in present-day Uzbekistan. Kilich Khan traveled to India in 1654 while on a Hajj, which is an Islamic pilgrimage. He eventually joined the army of Emperor Aurangzeb. Mir Qamar-ud-din's father, Ghazi ud-Din Khan, also served as a general and governor. These connections provided the young Mir Qamar-ud-din with a foundation in military and political life.

Mir Qamar-ud-din was born on 11 August 1671 in Agra. He received his name from Emperor Aurangzeb himself. As a teenager, he began participating in military campaigns alongside his father. In 1688, he assisted in the assault on the fort of Adoni. By age 19, he earned the title Chin Qilich Khan, meaning "boy swordsman." The emperor also gifted him a female elephant. He later proved his skill during the siege of Panhala Fort in 1700.

After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, the Mughal Empire entered a period of instability. Many leaders fought to control the throne, a time often called anarchy. During this era, the Sayyid brothers became extremely powerful. They acted as "king-makers" by choosing and removing emperors. Mir Qamar-ud-din initially remained neutral during these conflicts. However, he later joined Emperor Muhammad Shah to combat the influence of the Sayyid brothers. This support led to his appointment as Grand Vizier, or Prime Minister, in 1722.

His role as Grand Vizier was marked by efforts to reform the imperial court. He attempted to stop corruption, which made many powerful nobles his enemies. In 1723, political tensions forced him to leave the court in Delhi. He moved toward the Deccan region to establish his own authority. In 1724, after winning the Battle of Shakar Kheda against Mubariz Khan, the emperor recognized him as the permanent Viceroy of the Deccan. That same year, he proclaimed himself Nizam and began his own dynasty.

As the Nizam, he was a highly capable administrator and diplomat. In 1714, as Viceroy, he managed six Mughal provinces in southern India. He improved the region's finances and organized the local government. He also used clever diplomacy to manage relations with the Marathas. Instead of constant fighting, he brought certain Maratha generals into his service. He even worked with Sambhaji II of Kolhapur to maintain stability.

Despite his successes, the Nizam faced significant challenges from the Maratha Empire. In 1728, he was defeated by the Maratha leader Peshwa Bajirao I. Following this defeat, the Nizam essentially became a tributary to the Marathas. This means he had to provide certain payments or recognition to them. Even with these setbacks, his influence remained vast. His rule helped define the political landscape of southern India for many years.

Mir Qamar-ud-din's life connects the era of the Great Mughals to the rise of regional powers. He moved from being a loyal general to a powerful independent ruler. His ability to navigate complex political intrigues allowed him to build a lasting legacy. He lived until 1748, leaving behind a dynasty that would shape the history of Hyderabad. His journey from a young swordsman to a sovereign ruler illustrates the shifting power structures of his time.
