Nitrous oxide (medication)

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Nitrous oxide is a special gas used by doctors to help with pain. It is often mixed with oxygen to make it safe to breathe. Most doctors use a mix that is 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen. This gas is very important for many different kinds of care. It is used to help during childbirth and after a person has a trauma. It is even used for end-of-life care. Because it is so useful, the World Health Organization includes it on their List of Essential Medicines.

This gas works very quickly in the body. When a person breathes it in, the effect starts in about 30 seconds. This happens because the gas moves from the lungs to the brain very fast. The effect usually only lasts for about one minute. This is because the body removes the gas through the lungs very quickly. It does not stay or build up in the body under normal conditions. This rapid start and stop makes it a very helpful tool for managing sudden pain.

People have been studying this gas for a long time. It was discovered between the years 1772 and 1793. A man named Horace Wells used it for dental operations in Hartford in December 1844. Later, Gardner Quincy Colton introduced it more widely in New Haven and New York City in 1863. In 1911, an expert named Arthur Ernest Guedel described how people could breathe the mix themselves. By 1961, researchers like Michael Tunstall showed how to use a pre-mixed 50/50 gas. This helped the gas become a product that could be sold easily.

There are many important rules for using nitrous oxide safely. It must always be given with at least 21% oxygen, which is the same amount found in the air. It is not recommended for people with a bowel obstruction or a pneumothorax. It is also not for people who have been scuba diving in the last 24 hours. Some doctors suggest being careful with it during the first two parts of pregnancy. While short-term use has few side effects, long-term use might cause numbness or anemia.

Patients can often use the gas themselves with a special tool. This tool is called a demand-valve inhaler. It is placed over the nose and only releases gas when the person breathes in. This makes it safe because if a person gets too sleepy, they will simply drop the mask. This stops them from breathing more gas automatically. In big hospitals, doctors use more complex machines to deliver the gas. These machines use flowmeters and regulators to make sure the dose is exactly right.
