The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console developed by Nintendo.

This term means the device functions as both a home console and a portable tablet. You can dock the main unit to a base to play on a television screen.

Alternatively, you can remove it from the dock for handheld use. This design allows the system to bridge different gaming styles. It caters to players who want to play deeply at home and those who play leisurely on the go. The Switch was released worldwide in most regions on March 3, 2017.

The system uses unique wireless controllers called Joy-Cons. These controllers can attach to the sides of the tablet for handheld play. They can also be placed into a grip accessory to form a traditional gamepad.

Each Joy-Con includes buttons, directional analog sticks, motion sensing, and tactile feedback. This tactile feedback allows the controllers to provide physical sensations during gameplay.

Because they are wireless, they can also function as two separate controllers for multiplayer sessions. This versatility was a key part of the design process.

Nintendo developed the Switch to revitalize its business following financial losses. The company had struggled with poor sales of the Wii U console.

Additionally, mobile gaming was creating intense market competition. Satoru Iwata, the president at the time, pushed for novel hardware and mobile gaming strategies. He secured a business alliance with the Japanese mobile provider DeNA before his death. Following Iwata's death in July 2015, Tatsumi Kimishima became the president. The Switch was officially unveiled on October 20, 2016, under the codename "NX."

Engineers had to make many difficult technical choices during development. They needed to balance CPU power and speed with battery life and device size.

To make game development easier, they used a system on a chip (SOC) based on Nvidia's Tegra line. This choice helped third-party developers port their games to the Switch more easily. Nintendo focused on a middle-ground approach rather than chasing raw processing power. This helped ensure the device remained portable while still supporting a large game library.

There are several different versions of the Switch hardware. The original model was released in March 2017. On September 20, 2019, Nintendo released the Switch Lite.

The Switch has achieved massive commercial success across the globe. It has shipped over 155 million units worldwide. This makes it the second-best-selling console of all time, trailing only the PlayStation 2. It is also the best-selling console in Nintendo's history.

The Switch has influenced the broader gaming landscape and its successors. It competed against the eighth-generation consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It also competes with ninth-generation systems like the PlayStation 5.
