Long ago, people in Sumer had many gods. One was a mother goddess named Ninhursag. Her name means "lady of the sacred mountain."

She was a kind goddess. Many people saw her as a mother to all. She helped with new life and birth.

She lived in the mountains. Some stories say she was the earth itself. Because she was the earth, she helped things grow.

She had many different names. Some people called her Ninmah. This name means "Great Queen."

She also helped with wild animals. People saw stags on her temple walls. She was a very important part of their world.
