Nimbostratus cloud

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A nimbostratus is a large, dark-grey cloud. It often looks very plain and has few features. These clouds are important because they bring steady rain, snow, or sleet. This weather can last for many days at a time. Unlike some other storm clouds, they do not bring lightning or thunder. They can cover a huge area of the sky.

These clouds form in a specific way. They often appear along a warm front. A warm front happens when a warm air mass rises slowly. This rising air creates nimbostratus along with shallower stratus clouds. Sometimes, an altostratus cloud grows thicker and moves to lower levels. This change turns it into a nimbostratus cloud. They usually form in the middle level of the troposphere. Then, they spread vertically into the low and high levels.

People have studied these clouds for a long time. In 1802, Luke Howard studied clouds in France. He created three main groups based on how they look. He also used the name nimbus for complex clouds that produce rain. Later, in the 20th century, a group called the International Meteorological Committee changed things. They gave the cloud a more specific name. This new name, nimbostratus, was published in 1932 in the International Atlas of Clouds.

There are many interesting facts about these clouds. The name comes from a Latin word meaning "rain bearing cloud." In Australia, these clouds can bring very heavy rain. Sydney once recorded 24 hours of rain from nimbostratus alone. Some of that rain fell in just three hours. Sometimes, rain falls from the cloud but does not hit the ground. This is called virga. Other times, a ragged layer called pannus forms below the main cloud.

You can compare nimbostratus to other clouds you might see. Most sheet-like clouds stay in only one or two levels. However, nimbostratus can span many levels at once. Stratus clouds are low-level clouds found at all latitudes. Altostratus clouds stay in the middle level of the sky. High-level clouds like cirrostratus are made of ice crystals. These ice crystals can even make a halo around the sun. Nimbostratus is different because it is a major precipitation cloud.
