These animals live mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa. They love to stay near rivers and water. They do not live in the dry desert regions. This lizard is much bigger than many other reptiles. It can even grow larger than the perentie in Australia.

Its nostrils are high on its snout to help it breathe. On land, it is a quick runner. It also uses sharp claws to climb trees or dig in the dirt. The Nile monitor has a forked tongue to help it smell. It eats many different things like fish, frogs, and birds. It even eats eggs from crocodiles and other lizards.

Scientists have studied these lizards for many years. Carl Linnaeus gave them a scientific name in 1766. He called them Lacerta nilotica. Later, a man named Blasius Merrem created the name Varanus in 1820. Leopold Fitzinger moved them into that group in 1826. This gave them the name Varanus niloticus used today.

People in the Djenné-Djenno culture caught them for food long ago. This happened at least a thousand years ago.

There is a lot to learn about their bodies. Adult monitors can grow to be very long. Their teeth change as they get older. Young lizards have sharp, pointed teeth for eating. Adults have teeth that are blunt and shaped like pegs.

Their skin has many pretty patterns. They are often greyish-brown with yellow spots on their backs. Some monitors live in West African forests. These are called West African Nile monitors. They split from other monitors about 7.7 million years ago.

Sometimes these lizards end up in new places. Some live in Florida in the United States now.

They may have escaped from people who kept them as pets. Big storms called hurricanes can break their cages. This lets them get out into the wild. These lizards are very strong and can be quite aggressive. They are hard to keep as pets because they grow so fast. They can even be dangerous to small animals like cats.
