Many people live in this region. About 70 million people call it home. Cairo is the largest city in the delta. Other big cities include Alexandria and Port Said. People have farmed this land for at least 5,000 years. It is a very rich place for growing food.

Many animals live in and visit the delta. Hundreds of thousands of birds stay there during the winter. You might see little gulls or whiskered terns. Other animals include frogs, turtles, and mongooses. Long ago, crocodiles and hippos lived here too.

The delta is very old. Many ancient sites are found in the soil. Some old cities are even under the water now. Because the land is low, it is at risk from rising seas. This could change the area in the future.

The Nile Delta is a huge, green area in Lower Egypt.

It forms where the Nile River spreads out before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. From high above, the shape looks like a triangle or a flower. This shape is why scientists call it an arcuate delta.

The delta stretches about 240 kilometers from north to south. From west to east, it covers a large part of the coastline. It reaches from the city of Alexandria to Port Said. The area is a very important place for growing food.

Water moves through the delta in special ways. The Nile splits into two main paths called distributaries. These are named the Damietta and the Rosetta branches. They flow into the sea at cities with those same names. In the past, there were even more branches. Some of these, like the Wadi Tumilat, are no longer active. This happened because of silting or changes in the land. Now, the Aswan Dam stops the river from bringing new nutrients. Because of this, farmers must use a lot of fertilizer.

People have lived in this region for thousands of years. They have farmed the land for at least 5,000 years. Many ancient sites are hidden in the soil here. In 1799, people found the Rosetta Stone in the city of Rosetta.

Divers also found a sunken city called Heracleion underwater. They found Greek temples and bronze coins there. In 2019, experts found ancient tombs in the Kom Al-Khelgan area. These tombs held animal remains and carved stones. These discoveries help us learn about the past.

Today, about 70 million people live in the delta.

Cairo is the largest city in this region. Other big cities include Mansura, Tanta, and Zagazig. The weather is usually hot and dry like a desert. However, the northern coast is a bit cooler. It is also the wettest part of Egypt. Most rain falls during the winter months. In the summer, the heat can be very strong.

Nature is very busy in the delta. Hundreds of thousands of birds visit during the winter. You might see little gulls or whiskered terns. Other animals include frogs, turtles, and mongooses. Long ago, crocodiles and hippos lived here too. The delta is also at risk from the sea. If sea levels rise, much of the land could flood. This could affect many people and their farms.

The Nile Delta is a massive, fan-shaped landform located in Lower Egypt.

It forms where the Nile River spreads out before draining into the Mediterranean Sea. Scientists call this an arcuate delta, which means it is shaped like an arc or a triangle.

The delta is one of the largest in the world. It stretches approximately 240 kilometers from north to south. From west to east, it covers a significant portion of the Mediterranean coastline. The region reaches from Alexandria in the west to Port Said in the east. It is a vital agricultural hub for the country.

Water moves through the delta via several channels called distributaries. In the past, the delta had many more branches, such as the Pelusiac and the Sebennytic. Some ancient records suggest there were as many as seven branches.

Today, the Nile divides into two main distributaries: the Damietta and the Rosetta. These two branches flow into the Mediterranean at cities that share their names. Other branches, like the Wadi Tumilat, are now defunct. This happened because of silting, flood control, or changes in the landscape. The construction of the Aswan Dam also changed how water and nutrients move through the system.

Because the Aswan Dam blocks the natural flow of sediments, the delta faces new challenges. In the past, annual floods brought rich nutrients to the floodplains. Now, the soil has become much poorer. To grow crops, farmers must use large amounts of fertilizers. The topsoil in the delta can be as deep as 2 meters.

Additionally, the outer edges of the delta are currently experiencing erosion. Some coastal lagoons are also seeing higher salinity levels. This happens as they become more connected to the salt water of the Mediterranean Sea.

Humans have inhabited this fertile region for thousands of years. People have practiced intensive farming here for at least 5,000 years. The delta was a major part of Lower Egypt in ancient times. Many important archaeological sites are located throughout the region. For example, the famous Rosetta Stone was discovered in the port city of Rosetta in 1799.

In 2019, divers led by Franck Goddio found the sunken city of Heracleion. They uncovered Greek temples, bronze coins, and ancient granite columns. Other excavations in Kom Al-Khelgan have revealed tombs from the Second Intermediate Period.

Today, the Nile Delta is home to about 70 million people.

Cairo is the largest city in the delta. Other major urban centers include Shubra El Kheima, Port Said, and Mansura. Outside of these big cities, the population density averages 400 people per square kilometer. The climate is generally a hot desert climate. However, the northern coast is the wettest part of Egypt. It has more moderate temperatures than the rest of the country. Most of the annual rain falls during the winter months.

The delta is also a critical habitat for diverse wildlife. During the autumn, the river can turn red with lotus flowers. Hundreds of thousands of water birds spend their winters here. These include large concentrations of little gulls and whiskered terns. You can also find grey herons, egrets, and ibises. Other animals include mongooses, turtles, and the Nile monitor. While crocodiles and hippopotamus were common in ancient times, they are no longer found in the delta. The waters are also home to fish like the flathead grey mullet.

Climate change and rising sea levels pose a serious threat to this landscape. The low-lying delta is especially vulnerable to flooding. If polar ice caps melt, much of the northern delta could disappear. This includes the ancient city of Alexandria. A significant rise in sea level could affect 6.6% of the delta's total land cover. It could also put 887,000 people at risk of displacement. Furthermore, about 15% of the delta's cropland and 25% of its urban areas could be destroyed.
