The third region is the White Nile region. This stretch runs 800 kilometers toward Khartoum. It is a wide and calm stream. However, the river is shallow and loses much water to evaporation. In this region, the colors of the tributaries are very different. The White Nile is light due to quartz and feldspar. The Blue Nile is dark because of clay from Ethiopian basalt.

After Khartoum, the river enters the Main Nile region. It flows toward Cairo, Egypt. This section is about 500 meters wide. It is also about 10 meters deep at its deepest point. The river encounters several cataracts. A cataract is a section of rapids that makes the water unnavigable. These include the sixth cataract in the Sabaloka Game Reserve.
