Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin was a prominent Russian revolutionary and a major Marxist theorist.
Bukharin's early political life began during the Russian Revolution of 1905. He studied economics at Moscow Imperial University and joined the Bolsheviks in 1906.
After the February Revolution of 1917, Bukharin returned to Russia to join the growing Bolshevik movement. The Bolshevik membership grew from 24,000 in February 1917 to 200,000 by October 1917. Bukharin became a leading figure in the Moscow branch of the party. Following the October Revolution, he served as the editor of the party newspaper, *Pravda*. He also drafted and defended revolutionary decrees for the Moscow Soviet. His leadership helped establish the party's influence in the central provinces of Russia.
During the period of the Russian Civil War, Bukharin engaged in intense theoretical debates. He initially supported a policy known as war communism. However, he later became a chief advocate for the New Economic Policy, or NEP. The NEP was a system introduced in 1921 to strengthen the Soviet state. It allowed for some private ownership and capitalistic practices in agriculture and retail. This policy helped the economy recover after the war. Bukharin's support for the NEP positioned him as a key political player.
In the mid-1920s, Bukharin entered a period of significant political influence. He became a full member of the Politburo after Lenin's death in 1924.
Political shifts eventually led to Bukharin's decline in power. In 1929, Stalin decided to proceed with agricultural collectivisation during the "Great Break." Bukharin opposed this direction and was labeled the leader of the "Right Opposition."
The final stage of Bukharin's life occurred during the Great Purge. In February 1937, the government accused him of treason.
