In 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite. This achievement brought him great popularity during the late 1950s. He also navigated several international conflicts, including the Suez Crisis and the 1960 U-2 incident. Despite these successes, his relationship with the West remained extremely tense. He sought to rely more on missiles for national defense, leading him to cut conventional military forces.

The most dangerous moment of his leadership was the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. This event brought the world to the edge of conflict during the Cold War. While he had seen success in other areas, the mishandling of this crisis weakened his standing.
