Nikhil Banerjee was a famous player of the sitar. The sitar is a string instrument from India.

He belonged to the Maihar Gharana. This is a special school of music.

Nikhil learned from a great teacher named Allauddin Khan. He also studied with Ali Akbar Khan. These teachers taught him many skills. They taught him how to use the strings in new ways. They taught him how to play long, slow notes.

Nikhil had a very special sound. His sitar did not buzz as much as others. This made the notes last a long time. Some people said his playing was very fast. They said he was as fast as a cheetah!

To Nikhil, music was a spiritual path. He did not play just to be famous. He played to find a great truth. He was a master of both melody and rhythm. He even made two new ragas. A raga is a type of musical pattern.

He won a high honor called the Padma Bhushan for his art.
