This financial scale makes it a dominant force in the global sports industry.

The company's origins began with a simple distribution model. On January 25, 1964, Phil Knight and his coach, Bill Bowerman, founded "Blue Ribbon Sports" (BRS). Initially, they operated out of Eugene, Oregon. They acted as a distributor for a Japanese shoemaker called Onitsuka Tiger. In those early days, Knight sold shoes from his automobile at track meets.

During its first year, BRS sold 1,300 pairs of shoes and earned $8,000. By 1965, those sales grew to $20,000.

A major turning point occurred through scientific experimentation with shoe soles. Bill Bowerman wanted to create a lightweight sole that provided excellent grip. He wanted to avoid using heavy spikes on surfaces like grass or bark dust. In 1971, Bowerman used his wife's waffle iron to experiment with pouring rubber. This process created a textured tread that provided traction without extra weight. This innovation led to the "Moon Shoe" in 1972, which featured treads resembling astronaut footprints.

This was followed by the "Waffle Trainer" in 1974, which fueled rapid company growth.

As the business evolved, it transitioned from a distributor to an independent brand. Tension with Onitsuka Tiger led BRS to launch its own footwear line in 1972. The company officially changed its name to Nike, Inc. on May 30, 1971. The name comes from the Greek goddess of victory. Jeff Johnson, a staff member, is credited with coining the name "Nike."

The iconic "Swoosh" logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson and first used in June 1971. This logo was later registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 1974.

Nike has built a massive portfolio of brands and specialized product lines. The company markets products under names like Nike Golf, Nike Pro, and Nike Skateboarding. It also owns the Air Jordan brand and the Converse subsidiary.

Over the years, Nike acquired and sold various companies. It once owned Bauer Hockey, Cole Haan, Umbro, and Hurley International. Currently, Converse remains its only major subsidiary. The company's product range includes footwear, apparel, and equipment for many sports, including soccer, basketball, and cricket.

The brand's cultural impact is driven by famous marketing and athlete sponsorships. In 1988, the agency Wieden+Kennedy created the "Just Do It" slogan. This phrase was inspired by the final words of Gary Gilmore.

The slogan became so famous that it was enshrined in the Smithsonian Institution. Nike also maintains a massive global presence through retail stores called Niketown. In 2020, the Nike brand alone was valued at over $32 billion. This made it the most valuable brand among all sports businesses.

Nike's operations are vast and involve complex global logistics. The company employs 83,700 people worldwide. In 2023, footwear accounted for 64.7% of its product sales, while apparel made up 27.0%.

Most of its sales come from North America, which represents 42.2% of the total. The company also manages significant markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Nike continues to integrate new technology into its business. It has acquired data companies like Zodiac and Celect to improve digital sales. It even entered the virtual space by purchasing RTFKT Studios in 2021.
