He wanted to recreate the atmosphere of campfire music using his keyboards. He used experimental acoustic styles he had written while in the Finnish Army. He invited Emppu Vuorinen to play acoustic guitar and Tarja Turunen to provide classical vocals. They recorded an acoustic demo in late 1996. The band's name, Nightwish, came from their very first song together.

As the group evolved, they transitioned from acoustic music to a heavier sound. In early 1997, Jukka Nevalainen joined as the drummer. The band replaced acoustic guitars with electric guitars to add heavy metal elements. This combination formed the core of their distinct symphonic metal style. They released their debut album, Angels Fall First, in November 1997.

This album featured vocals from both Holopainen and Turunen. The band played their first live show in Kitee on December 31, 1997. They performed for 400 people and felt extremely nervous during the event.

The band's sound became more technical and progressive with their second album, Oceanborn. Released in 1998, this album moved away from folk elements. It featured guest growling vocals from Tapio Wilska to contrast Turunen's soprano singing. The single "Sacrament of Wilderness" reached number one on the Finnish charts. By 2000, the release of Wishmaster brought the band their first world tour. They performed in locations as far as South America, Mexico, and Canada. This era established them as an international act.

Being in a successful band involves many changes in membership. In 2001, Sami Vänskä left the band and was replaced by Marko Hietala.

Their sixth album, Dark Passion Play, was also a massive hit, selling nearly 2 million copies. The single "Amaranth" became one of their most successful songs in Europe. These numbers demonstrate the band's wide reach and lasting popularity.

Recent years have seen further changes to the band's lineup. Drummer Jukka Nevalainen had been inactive since 2014 due to severe insomnia. In July 2019, he announced he would not return to the band. Kai Hahto, who had been filling in for him, became the official drummer. Additionally, bassist Marko Hietala left the group in January 2021. Jukka Koskinen was announced as his replacement in August 2022.
