Nielsen Media Research

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Have you ever wondered how TV networks know which shows are popular? A company called Nielsen Media Research finds the answer. They measure how many people watch TV, radio, and movies. This helps networks decide to keep a show or cancel it.

In the past, Nielsen used a diary. Families would write down every show they watched in a book. They also used a tool called an Audimeter. This was a device that attached to a TV. It recorded channels onto film. People would mail that film to the company each week.

Today, things are much faster. Nielsen uses a People Meter. This is a device that tracks what people watch. It sends the data through a telephone line every night. They even use Portable People Meters. These help track different people in one home.

Nielsen also looks at demographics. Demographics are groups of people, like their age or sex. This is important for ads. Companies want to know if young people or older people are watching. This helps them decide how much to pay for a commercial.
