Because of this, he resisted making changes to how the government worked. Even when a group called the Duma was made, he kept most of the control. This way of ruling was called an autocracy.

First, Russia lost a war against Japan in the Russo-Japanese War. Then, a big revolution happened in 1905 that caused much unrest. Later, Russia joined the fighting in World War I. This war brought many military defeats and hard times for people.

Economic problems made people lose confidence in Nicholas's ability to lead. These struggles made his popularity fall very low.

In March 1917, a revolution forced Nicholas to step down from his throne. This event ended the long rule of the Romanov dynasty. After he left, he and his family were held in custody. They were eventually moved to Yekaterinburg. On July 17, 1918, the family was executed by the Bolsheviks.

His mother was the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark. Because of this, Nicholas had many royal relatives across Europe. He was a first cousin to King George V of the United Kingdom. He was also related to the monarchs of Denmark, Greece, and Norway.

His childhood was spent in a very private and stable environment. Nicholas and his four siblings were raised in a Spartan way. They followed an English-style routine that included rising at 6:00 AM. They often took cold baths and ate simple meals like porridge.

He received a private education from many different teachers. His favorite teacher was Charles Heath, who taught him English. He also studied law and history with Konstantin Pobedonostsev. Pobedonostsev taught him that the Tsar had a sacred duty. This duty was to maintain the autocracy and the Orthodox religion.

Nicholas was not naturally prepared for the heavy duties of an emperor. He was a shy man who preferred the privacy of his family.

He enjoyed military life, such as uniforms, insignia, and parades. However, he often felt uncomfortable in official political situations. His father, Alexander III, sometimes worried about his son's maturity. Alexander once told him he was too childish for responsibility. Despite this, Nicholas followed his father's lead and joined various committees. He also developed a deep love for his wife, Alexandra. She was the daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse.

As emperor, Nicholas practiced a system called autocracy. This meant he held absolute power over the nation's governance. Even after the establishment of the Duma, he resisted political reform. The Duma was a legislative body meant to give people a voice.

Nicholas wanted to retain full control over the empire. While his reign saw industrial growth, it also saw much unrest. He faced criticism after the Russo-Japanese War. He also faced turmoil during the Revolution of 1905. These events began to erode the public's confidence in his leadership.

World War I brought even greater challenges to his rule. Russia participated in the war, but it faced many military defeats.

These losses, combined with economic hardship, made his popularity decline. In March 1917, the February Revolution forced him to abdicate. This act ended the 304-year rule of the Romanovs. Following his abdication, the imperial family was held in custody. They were first held by the Provisional Government. Later, they were transferred to the custody of the Bolsheviks.

On July 17, 1918, the family was executed in Yekaterinburg.

This event brought a violent end to the Romanov dynasty. In the years following, Soviet historians called him a callous tyrant. They claimed he persecuted his people and sent soldiers to pointless deaths. However, modern historians often hold a different view. Most believe he was a well-intentioned but poor ruler. He simply could not handle the massive challenges facing Russia. In 2000, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized the family as passion bearers. This happened after their remains were discovered and reburied in 1998.
