Adult newts have lizard-like bodies and complete their life cycle by returning to the water to breed.

Newt development follows a very specific sequence. In the Northern Hemisphere, the main breeding season occurs in June and July. After complex courtship rituals in ponds or slow streams, the male transfers a spermatophore to the female. The female then lays fertilized eggs, which are usually attached to aquatic plants.
