New Valley Governorate is a major administrative region in Egypt. It is located in the southwestern part of the country. This area sits within the Western Desert, which is part of the Sahara Desert. The governorate is positioned between the Nile River, northern Sudan, and southeastern Libya. It is the largest governorate in Egypt. In fact, it covers roughly half of the entire country's land area. Because it is so massive, it is also one of the most sparsely populated regions. It ranks as one of the largest country subdivisions in the world.

The name of the governorate comes from the New Valley Project. This project is a large-scale effort to irrigate the Western Desert. Irrigation is the process of supplying water to land to help plants grow. This project has created new farming areas in the desert. One such area is called Sharq El Owainat. These efforts allow for agricultural activities in an otherwise dry environment. People in the region use these methods to support farming and local life.
