Dreyer looked at reports from many different telescopes. Some telescopes were only 2 inches wide. Other telescopes were as large as 72 inches. This made the data hard to organize because every report was different.

Dreyer wanted to add even more objects to his work. He first made a supplement to an older list. Then, the Royal Astronomical Society asked him to make a new version. This became the NGC published in 1888. Later, he made the Index Catalogue, or IC.

He published IC I in 1895 with 1,520 objects. He published IC II in 1908 with 3,866 objects. Together, these added 5,386 more items to the collection.

Even a great list can have mistakes. The original NGC had errors in positions and descriptions. Many people worked to fix these mistakes over many years. In 1973, Jack W. Sulentic and William G. Tifft made the RNGC. In 1988, Roger W. Sinnott made the NGC2000.0.

There was also the NGC/IC Project. Steve Gottlieb started this project in 1990. It finished in 2017 after many years of hard work.

John Louis Emil Dreyer compiled the original NGC in 1888. He did not discover all these objects himself. Instead, he acted as a massive organizer of existing data. He consolidated work from William Herschel and his son, John Herschel. He also used observations from Caroline Herschel. Dreyer had to manage reports from many different telescopes. These instruments had apertures, or opening sizes, ranging from 2 to 72 inches. This variety made his task very complex. Different telescopes produced different levels of detail and clarity.

Because the data was so varied, errors occurred. Some mistakes involved the exact position of an object. Others involved how the object was described. Dreyer handled this by referencing his sources. This allowed later astronomers to check his work. He also created the Index Catalogue, known as the IC. This was a supplement to the original NGC. He published IC I in 1895 with 1,520 objects. He published IC II in 1908 with 3,866 objects.

Together, these added 5,386 new objects to the collection. Most of these were found using new photography.

Many different groups have tried to fix the catalogue over time. In 1973, Jack W. Sulentic and William G. Tifft published the RNGC. This was the Revised New General Catalogue. However, the RNGC actually introduced some new errors. It missed some previous corrections made by Dreyer. It even listed nearly 800 objects as "non-existent." This label was used for duplicates or objects not found later. For example, the Copeland Septet galaxy was listed as non-existent in the RNGC. This was a mistake, as the group does indeed exist.

Other scientists worked to resolve these confusion points. In 1988, Roger W. Sinnott created NGC2000.0. This version used the J2000.0 coordinates for better accuracy. In 1990, Steve Gottlieb started the NGC/IC Project. This was a collaboration between professional and amateur astronomers. The team included Harold G. Corwin Jr. and Malcolm Thomson. They worked until the project finished in 2017. They checked all historical data and collected new images. They aimed to correct every mistake in the original lists.

Modern updates continue to grow the catalogue. Wolfgang Steinicke compiled the RNGC/IC in 2009. He updated this work again in 2019. This latest version contains 13,957 objects.

Only 301 objects, or about 2.3%, are listed as "not found." This shows how much more accurate our lists have become. One notable object in this catalogue is NGC 771. It is a star with a magnitude of 4.0. This means it is one of the brighter stars in the list.

Errors in the past teach us about scientific progress. For instance, the reflection nebula NGC 2163 was once called non-existent. This happened because of a transcription error by Dreyer. The RNGC then made the error even worse. It reversed the sign of the declination, which is a coordinate. This mistake caused the object to seemingly vanish from the list. Eventually, researchers corrected these errors through careful study. These stories show how astronomy relies on constant checking and revision.
