These additions brought the total number of objects to 110. There was even a debate about object M102. Some thought it was just another object already on the list.

The rest had been seen by other astronomers. By 1780, the list had grown to 70 objects. In 1781, Messier published a final version with 103 objects. This version appeared in the Connaissance des Temps for the year 1784.

After Messier, other astronomers added more objects to the list.

They found these objects by using side notes in Messier's own texts. In 1921, Nicolas Camille Flammarion added M104. In 1947, Helen Sawyer Hogg added M105, M106, and M107. Owen Gingerich added M108 and M109 in 1960. Finally, Kenneth Glyn Jones added M110 in 1967.

There was also a debate about M102. Pierre Méchain observed it, but he later thought it was just M101. Some suggest it might actually be the galaxy NGC 5866.

Messier objects are significant because they are very close to Earth. Because they are close, they are among the brightest deep-sky objects. This makes them perfect for study with professional instruments. Scientists use these tools to see small, significant details.
