Neutrophil

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Neutrophils are a very important type of white blood cell. They are part of your innate immunity, which is your body's first line of defense. These cells are the most common type of white blood cell in humans. They make up about 40% to 70% of all your white blood cells.

Because there are so many of them, they are often the very first cells to find a germ. They help your body respond to things like bacterial infections or injuries.

These cells work using a special way called chemotaxis. This is a process where they follow chemical signals to find a problem. They detect signals like interleukin-8 or hydrogen peroxide to know where to go.

Once they find the site, they move from the blood vessels into the tissue. They can change their shape to look like amoebas to crawl through tight spaces. This allows them to hunt for germs very quickly. They can even work together in groups, which is called swarming.

Neutrophils are made in a place called the bone marrow. They start as stem cells and then change into different types of neutrophils. Some are called neutrophil-killers and others are called neutrophil-cagers.

Scientists can tell them apart by how they look under a microscope. When they are stained with special dyes, neutrophils turn a neutral pink color. This is different from other cells that might turn blue or red. Most normal neutrophils have a nucleus with 2 to 5 lobes.

There are many interesting facts about how these cells behave. A single person produces about 10^11 neutrophils every single day. They do not live for a very long time. Most neutrophils only live between 5 and 135 hours. This short life is actually helpful for your body. It prevents the cells from causing too much damage to your own tissues. They are also the main cells found in pus, which is why pus looks white or yellow.

You can think of neutrophils like a fast-acting emergency team. Just like firefighters rush to a fire, these cells rush to an infection. They use three main ways to fight: eating germs, releasing chemicals, or making tiny traps. One way they fight is called phagocytosis, which means they swallow the germ.

They even create a "respiratory burst" to help kill the bacteria they eat. This shows how hard your body works to keep you healthy every day.
