This name comes from the Mapudungun word "Nehuenken," which means drafty.

The land has two very different looks. The west side has mountains and fertile valleys. These areas are green with many forests. You can find many beautiful lakes here. One huge lake is Nahuel Huapi. Other lakes include Aluminé and Lácar. The east side is very different. It is a dry plateau with flat land. Most of this land is bare. Only the areas near rivers like the Limay are green. The climate is often dry because the mountains block moisture. Most of the rain falls during the winter months.

History in this land goes back a long time. Long ago, people like the Tehuelches lived here.

Scientists found very old maize remains in the Lácar Department. These were found in pottery from hundreds of years ago. This maize likely came from Peru during the Inca Empire. Later, Spanish explorers arrived in the 1550s. Jesuit priests even tried to start missions in the area. One mission was on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake.

Neuquén is a province located in western Argentina. It sits at the northern edge of the Patagonia region.

The province is defined by several natural borders. The Andes mountains lie to the west, separating Neuquén from Chile. To the north, the Colorado River marks the border with Mendoza Province. The Limay River forms the southeastern boundary with Río Negro Province. At its northeast corner, the province meets La Pampa Province. The name Neuquén comes from the Neuquén River. This name derives from the Mapudungun word "Nehuenken," which means drafty.

The landscape consists of two very different environments. The western region features mountainous, fertile valleys covered in forests. This area contains a vast lacustrine system, which is a group of lakes.

Major lakes include Nahuel Huapi, which covers 550 square kilometers. Other significant lakes are Aluminé, Lácar, and Huechulaufquen. The eastern side of the province is an arid plateau. This land is mostly dry and bare. Vegetation is mostly limited to the basins of the Neuquén and Limay rivers. The province also contains the Arrayanes forest within Los Arrayanes National Park.

The climate is classified as the most continental in Patagonia. This means there are large diurnal ranges, or differences between day and night temperatures. The Andes mountains play a major role in the weather. They block most moisture from the Pacific Ocean. This creates a rain shadow effect, making much of the province dry. Most areas receive less than 500 millimeters of precipitation annually. In the west, the climate is more Mediterranean. This area experiences more rain during the winter months.

Strong winds from the west or southwest also increase evaporation.

Ancient history in Neuquén is incredibly deep. The province is famous for prehistoric life, such as the Argentinosaurus.

This was one of the largest known dinosaurs. Much later, indigenous groups like the Tehuelches and Pehuenche inhabited the land. Archaeologists found maize remains in the Lácar Department. These were found in pottery dated between 730 and 920 years before present. This maize likely traveled from Peru via the Inca Empire. By the 1550s, Spanish explorers arrived in the region. Jesuit priests also established missions, such as one on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake.

Political changes shaped the modern province. In 1879, the Conquest of the Desert began. This event broke aboriginal resistance in the region. By 1884, the Territory of Neuquén received its current boundaries. The capital city moved several times between different locations. It was once located in Norquín, Campana Mahuida, and Chos Malal. Eventually, the capital became the city of Confluencia, now known as Neuquén. In 1955, Neuquén officially became an Argentine province. The population grew steadily over the decades. According to the 2022 census, the province has 710,814 inhabitants.

The economy of Neuquén is very strong but highly specialized. It is one of Argentina's most prosperous provinces. However, it relies heavily on the mining and extractive sectors. These sectors account for roughly half of the province's total output. A major driver is the production of natural gas and petroleum. In 1918, petroleum was discovered in Plaza Huincul. Today, the Vaca Muerta formation provides huge unconventional hydrocarbon reserves.

The province also uses its water resources for electric power. The El Chocón Dam is one of the most important in Argentina.

Natural resources and tourism also support the region. The mountains and lakes attract many visitors. People enjoy outdoor activities like snowboarding at Cerro Chapelco.
