Nepali is a major Indo-Aryan language used throughout the Himalayan region of South Asia.
The language functions through a complex system of grammar and social respect. Nepali is a highly-fusional language, meaning words change form to show their role in a sentence. It uses a subject–object–verb (SOV) word order as its dominant arrangement. One of its most important features is the use of honorifics. Honorifics are different levels of speech used to show respect. There are three major levels: low, medium, and high. Some dialects also use very high or royal levels. The low level is for when no special respect is due. The medium level signifies equal status or neutrality. High and very high levels are used to show great respect. The royal form was used exclusively by and for the royal family.
Nepali has several distinct historical stages and linguistic variations. It is classified within the Eastern Pahari group of the Northern zone of Indo-Aryan. Historically, the language was known as "Khas Kura," meaning the speech of the Khas people. As the Gorkha Kingdom grew, it became known as "Gorkha Bhasa." Over time, different dialects emerged due to influences from Sanskrit, Maithili, Hindi, and Bengali. These influences helped the language spread across different regions. Today, these various influences have helped shape the modern version of the language.
The history of Nepali began in the Sinja Valley of the Karnali Province. This area was the capital of the Khasa Kingdom between the 10th and 14th centuries. The language evolved from Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Apabhraṃśa. The earliest known inscription in Nepali is believed to be in Dullu, Dailekh District. This inscription dates back to the reign of King Bhupal Damupal around the year 981.
Significant numbers show how widespread the language has become. There are approximately 19 million native speakers of Nepali. An additional 14 million people use it as a second language. In Nepal, the 2011 census showed that 44.6% of the population speaks it as a first language. Another 32.8% speak it as a second language. This means about 77.20% of the population in Nepal uses the language. In India, there are nearly 3 million speakers.
Literature played a massive role in shaping the modern language. During the 19th century, Nepali developed a significant literary tradition. Around 1830, poets wrote about themes from the Sanskrit epics, such as the Ramayana. The poet Bhanubhakta Acharya famously translated the Ramayana into Nepali.

Nepali connects to many broader cultural and political systems. It is part of the larger Indo-European language family. The language has also been central to political movements in India. For example, the Nepali Language Movement in the 1980s sought official recognition in the Indian Constitution. In 1992, the Indian Lok Sabha passed a motion to add Nepali to the Eighth Schedule.
