It was between the rulers and a group called the Maoists. The Maoists wanted to end the monarchy. They wanted a new kind of government for the people.

The war was very hard for everyone. More than 17,000 people died during this time. Many people had to leave their homes in the countryside.

The Maoists often stayed in rural areas. The government held the big cities and towns.

In 2001, a sad event happened at the royal palace. King Birendra and his family were killed. This changed how the country was led. Later, King Gyanendra took direct power. This caused more tension between the groups.

People began to protest for democracy. They used non-violent ways to show they wanted change. In 2006, the sides finally talked. They signed a peace deal in November. This deal ended the fighting. It helped Nepal move toward a new way of life.
