The sacred lotus, known scientifically as Nelumbo nucifera, is a remarkable aquatic perennial.

It is a member of the Nelumbonaceae family. This plant is often confused with water lilies from the Nymphaeaceae family. However, modern taxonomy places the lotus in the order Proteales. It is a highly versatile species used for food, medicine, and religious symbols. The plant is the national flower of India and the unofficial flower of Vietnam. It holds deep spiritual meaning in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Chinese culture.

The biology of the lotus allows it to thrive in specific environments. It is adapted to grow in the flood plains of slow-moving rivers and delta areas. The plant's roots grow in nutrient-rich, loamy soil at the bottom of the water. From these roots, the plant develops rhizomes, which are thick, starch-rich underground stems. The leaves, or lamina, can be peltate, meaning they are shield-shaped. Some leaves float on the surface, while others are held high by long petioles, or leaf stalks. These stalks can reach lengths that allow the plant to grow in deep water.

One of the most fascinating biological processes in the lotus is thermogenesis. This is the ability of the flowers to regulate their own temperature. Even if the air temperature drops to 10°C, the flowers can maintain a temperature of about 30°C to 35°C. Scientists believe this heat helps attract cold-blooded insect pollinators to the blossoms. The flowers are quite large and can grow up to 30 centimeters in diameter. Some cultivated varieties have an incredible number of petals. The Japanese variety "ohmi myoren" can have between 2,000 and 5,000 petals in one flower.

The reproductive cycle of the lotus involves extremely resilient seeds. A fertilized flower produces a fruit containing a cluster of 10 to 30 ovoid seeds. These seeds can enter a state of dormancy, where they remain inactive for very long periods. In the wild, many seeds are eaten by animals, but others settle into the pond silt. When floods occur, the movement of sediment can break the seeds open. This rehydrates the seeds and allows a new colony to begin growing. In 1994, researchers successfully germinated a seed that was approximately 1,300 years old.

Humans have cultivated the lotus for over 3,000 years for various purposes. Farmers categorize lotus varieties into three main types: rhizome, seed, and flower lotus. In China, rhizome lotus is the most common, covering about 70% of the production area. These plants are grown specifically for their large, edible underground stems. There are also different types of rhizome cultivars, such as "adlittoral" varieties. These grow in shallow water and produce crisp rhizomes that are excellent for frying. Other cultivars are categorized by when they are harvested, such as "pre-mature" or "serotinous" types.

The harvest of the lotus is a detailed process that depends on the desired part. If farmers want stolons, they must harvest them by hand within two to three months. Flowers can be picked every few days throughout the summer. To harvest seeds, farmers wait until the seed pods turn black, which takes four to eight months. The rhizomes take the longest, maturing in six to nine months. In large-scale Japanese farming, machines are used to replace manual labor. In smaller settings, workers use fork-like tools to dig the rhizomes from the drained soil.

Beyond its physical uses, the lotus is chemically complex. The leaves contain a substance called miquelianin, which is a type of flavonol. The plant also contains various alkaloids, such as coclaurine and norcoclaurine. The whole plant contains bioactive compounds like nuciferine and neferine. These substances are being studied by scientists for their potential pharmacological effects in medicine. Because of these properties, the lotus is often used in traditional medicine and as a functional food.

Today, the distribution of Nelumbo nucifera is very wide. It is native to regions ranging from northern India and the Himalayas to East Asia and the Amur region. It can also be found in the Caspian Sea area. While it is now common in Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Australia, this is likely due to human translocation. The plant's ability to survive in diverse climates and its many uses make it a vital part of many ecosystems and human cultures.
