Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was a major political figure in India. He served as the sixth President of India from 1977 to 1982. His career spanned several decades of Indian history. He held many high-ranking offices in both state and national governments. Reddy was a key leader during the movement for Indian independence. He also helped shape the government of the newly independent nation. His life shows how one person can move through many different roles in a democracy.

Reddy's political journey began with the struggle against British rule. He was born on May 19, 1913, in Illur village. After visiting Anantapur with Mahatma Gandhi in 1929, he joined the independence movement. He left his college studies in 1931 to become an activist. Reddy participated in a student satyagraha, which is a form of non-violent protest. Because of his activism, he was imprisoned several times. He spent much of the period between 1940 and 1945 in jail. One such place was the Amraoti jail, where he served alongside other famous activists.

After independence, Reddy held many important leadership positions. He served as a minister for the Madras State starting in 1949. He later became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He held this role during two different periods. His first term lasted from November 1, 1956, to January 11, 1960. His second term was from March 12, 1962, to February 20, 1964.
