Navy blue is a very dark shade of blue. It is a color that feels strong and formal. People often use it for school uniforms and business suits. It is also a very popular color for sports teams. You might see it in a soccer jersey or a baseball cap. This color is special because it connects to history and the sea.

This color got its name from the British Royal Navy. In the late 18th century, officers wore dark blue and white. They chose dark colors for a practical reason. Dark colors do not show dirt or wear as easily. This was helpful during long trips at sea. Before 1780, people sometimes called it marine blue. Later, the British press began calling it navy blue.

Most navy blue clothes were made using indigo dye. This is a natural dye used for a very long time. In the 18th and 19th centuries, almost every navy uniform used indigo. There is also a color called Persian indigo. This name comes from Persian cloth that was dyed with indigo. Another name for it was regimental. This was because many nations used it for navy uniforms in the 1800s.

Today, navy blue appears in many different places. The United States Navy uses a specific navy blue for its uniforms and its flag. Some navies, like the Royal Canadian Navy, actually use a color that looks black. This happened because the dye became darker over many years. You can even find navy blue on computers. It was one of the first 16 colors used for computer displays in the late 1980s.

Many famous sports teams love this color too. In soccer, teams like Chelsea F.C. and the French national team use it. In baseball, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels use navy blue. It is also used in fashion to create a nautical style. This style often uses navy blue and white with gold buttons. It makes people think of the ocean and naval traditions.
