Sailors used a strong part on the front of the boat to hit enemy ships. The Greeks used this method in the Battle of Salamis.

In that battle, the Greeks won by trapping Persian ships in a narrow space.

Later, ways of fighting changed. In the late 1500s, people used gunpowder. This meant ships used heavy guns instead of just ramming.

Different groups ruled the seas at different times. The Romans built a large navy to control the Mediterranean Sea.

Later, Muslim fleets became very strong. In the year 1275, an inventor named Hasan al-Rammah made a torpedo. This was a tool that used rockets and gunpowder to hit ships. Many old sea battles left shipwrecks on the ocean floor. Today, people study these wrecks to learn about the past.
