This tree belongs to the spurge family, known as Euphorbiaceae. To collect the rubber, workers use a process called tapping. They make precise incisions in the bark of the tree. This wounding causes the tree to produce a milky, white fluid called latex. The latex is a colloid that flows into collection vessels. Manufacturers then refine this liquid latex into solid rubber. A properly managed tree can continue to produce latex for several years after tapping begins.

While the Pará rubber tree is the primary source, other plants also produce latex. Some of these plants produce rubber that is harder to use or tap. For example, Congo rubber comes from vines in the genus Landolphia. Dandelions also contain latex with similar rubber qualities. In the past, research in Nazi Germany tried to use dandelions for rubber, but those projects failed. However, in 2013, scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute developed a specific cultivar of the Kazakh dandelion.

By inhibiting a key enzyme, they made it suitable for commercial use. Other plants like guayule and the rubber fig also show promise as alternative sources.

The history of rubber begins with the indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica. The Olmec culture provided the earliest archaeological evidence of Hevea latex use. They used the material to create balls for the Mesoamerican ballgame. Later, the Maya and Aztec cultures used rubber for containers and waterproof textiles. In 1736, Charles Marie de La Condamine introduced rubber samples to the Académie Royale des Sciences in France. He called it caoutchouc, a word derived from the Manina language. In 1770, Joseph Priestley observed that rubber could erase pencil marks. This observation led to the common English name "rubber."

Rubber production changed significantly during the 19th century. In 1839, Charles Goodyear redeveloped vulcanization, a process used to stabilize rubber.

These synthetic materials offer better strength and durability. However, natural rubber remains important for its specific properties. Scientists continue to study plants like guayule to ensure a steady supply of natural elastomers for the future.
