It is operated and funded by the Australian federal government. The museum was officially established through the National Museum of Australia Act 1980. Its primary mission is to profile the diverse history of the nation. This includes 50,000 years of Indigenous heritage and settlement since 1788. It also explores major milestones like Federation and the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The museum serves as a lively forum for debate about Australia's past and future.

The museum's physical collection is known as the National Historical Collection. It contains more than 210,000 individual objects. The collection focuses on three central themes. These are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, Australian history since 1788, and the interaction between people and the environment.

Notable items include the world's largest collection of Aboriginal bark paintings and stone tools. Other famous pieces include the heart of the racehorse Phar Lap and the Holden prototype No. 1 car. You can even find an Australian flag recovered from the World Trade Center ruins.

The architecture of the museum is highly unusual and non-symmetrical.

Architect Howard Raggatt designed the building using a theme of knotted ropes. This design symbolizes how many different Australian stories are tangled together. The building is meant to be the center of a knot with trailing strips. One large loop forms a walkway that extends past the nearby AIATSIS building. This feature is called the "Uluru Axis" because it aligns with the central Australian landmark. This alignment connects the Canberra city plan with the spiritual heart of Indigenous Australia.

Because of its unique shape, the building does not look like a traditional museum. It features startling colors, unusual angles, and unpredictable textures. Some critics have even called it a difficult example of official architecture. The exterior is covered in anodised aluminium panels. Many of these panels include words written in braille. Some messages are friendly, like "mate" or "she'll be right." Others are much more controversial, such as "sorry" or "forgive us our genocide." These controversial phrases have been obscured by silver discs to make them illegible.

The history of the museum's site is also significant.

The museum sits on the Acton Peninsula on Lake Burley Griffin. This site was previously the location of the Royal Canberra Hospital. That hospital was demolished under tragic circumstances on 13 July 1997. The museum building itself did not have a permanent home until 11 March 2001. That was the date the purpose-built facility officially opened. Since then, the museum has expanded, including a new cafe and administration wing completed in 2013.

In addition to displaying objects, the museum performs vital social work. It acts as a temporary repository for the repatriation of ancestral remains. This means it helps return Indigenous remains to their original communities. As of March 2019, the museum had helped return over 1,400 remains from museums worldwide.

The museum also creates traveling exhibitions to reach regional communities. For example, the "Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters" exhibition was a collaboration with Aboriginal elders. This exhibition traveled to international cities like Berlin and Paris.

Technological innovation and research are central to the museum's operations. The Research Centre uses a cross-disciplinary approach to study history. This helps the museum remain a place for new ideas. Between 2003 and 2008, the museum even hosted "Talkback Classroom," a forum for students. The museum also uses new technologies for outreach programming. This helps connect the museum's vast collection to people living in distant regional areas. Through these efforts, the NMA connects the deep past of the continent to the modern world.
