Canberra is the capital city of Australia.

Long before the city was built, Aboriginal Australians lived here. Groups like the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people inhabited the area. They lived on this land for up to 21,000 years. They managed the land with fire and hunted for food. They even farmed yams. Some people believe the name "Canberra" comes from the Ngunnawal language. It might mean "meeting place."
European settlers arrived in the first half of the 19th century. One early landowner was Joshua John Moore. He named his land "Canberry" in 1823. The oldest surviving public building is St John's Anglican Church. It was consecrated in 1845.

Long before European arrival, Aboriginal Australians inhabited this region. Groups such as the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples lived here for up to 21,000 years. They managed the landscape using fire and farmed yams. They also hunted for food. Archaeological evidence shows rock shelters, paintings, and stone tools.
European settlement began in the first half of the 19th century. In 1820, Charles Throsby Smith led the first British expedition to the area. By 1823, the region was known as the Limestone Plains. Joshua John Moore became the first European landowner. He named his 1823 land grant "Canberry."
Canberra's creation was the result of a political compromise. Following the federation of Australian colonies in 1901, a dispute arose. Both Sydney and Melbourne wanted to be the national capital. To resolve this, the capital would be built in New South Wales. However, it had to be far from Sydney. Melbourne served as the temporary seat of government during construction. Initially, Dalgety was chosen as the site. But the New South Wales government refused to give up that territory. Eventually, the Yass-Canberra region was selected in 1908.
Unlike most cities, Canberra is an entirely planned city. American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin designed it. Their plan was influenced by the garden city movement. The design uses geometric motifs. These shapes align with topographical landmarks. These include Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie, Capital Hill, and City Hill.

As the capital, Canberra houses many vital federal institutions. Parliament House and Government House are central to its role. The city also contains the High Court and many government agencies.
Canberra is recognized for its high quality of life. It has been ranked among the best cities to live in and visit. Compared to national averages, the unemployment rate is lower. The average income is also higher. The population is younger and has higher levels of tertiary education. At the 2021 Census, 28.7% of inhabitants were born overseas. As of November 2025, the Australian Public Service accounted for about 25% of all jobs. Other major industries include health care, professional services, and education.
